There’s a new tot trend on the horizon and it involves all things sparkly, pricey and downright ridiculous. Behold pre-k proms. Yes, apparently it’s not enough to go through the trials and tribulations of real prom, typically held at the end of one’s high school career; we must also put our pre-kindergartners through the pomp and circumstance.
Granted, the pictures we’ve found under hashtags like #kiddyprom are pretty darn cute, they’re also alarming. This is coming from a former (and reformed) dance mom who lived in the world of makeup and bling for far too long.
Why…just why?! What happened to the days of getting a scrapbook of your child’s messy- ahem, I mean “abstract”- artwork for their pre-k year? Schools and parents across the country are now encouraging girls and boys to take “dates” to proms.
I do get the idea of dressing up for kids as a fun photo-op (for the parents, not the kids)…I’d love for my athletic six-year-old to trade her leos and sports shorts for a dress and headband every now and then. However, the pressure put on PRE kindergartners to dress up, go with dates, even have full hair and makeup is daunting. And expensive!
What do you all think? Is pre-k prom going too far or simply fun and frilly?
