You may have seen these breathtaking bowls on Instagram feeds everywhere (usually Los Angeles fashion bloggers, feeding their “souls” one $20 breakfast at a time)…if not, we’re here to tell you that acai bowls are as delicious as they look!

Also, the superfruit-based smoothie has tons of health benefits and endless options for toppings per your specific taste. I’ve personally gotten bowls at health stores for between $10-14. Yes, that’s not cheap; however, they are super filling and make you feel good! You will never feel bloated from these.

Sign me up, you’re saying right? Here’s how to start making your own acai bowls at home. PS- Children love these, especially when they get to pick out their own “toppers!”

Find and puree frozen acai

Head to your closest Whole Foods, Fresh Market, maybe even your Kroger or Giant Eagle. There will be some sort of frozen acai goodness up for grabs. If you’re having a hard time finding the Brazilian berry, visit the Sambazon site here.

After you buy all the acai you can handle- or afford- it’s back to the blender. You want a smooth, not chunky consistency but also not too runny or it will feel like you’re spoon-feeding yourself (and your loved ones) soup. We like to mix in a little almond milk or soy milk as we puree but check the recipes out below for specifics!

In addition to acai, blend:

  • 1 14-oz package frozen strawberries
  • 1 frozen banana, broken into pieces
  • 1 cup unsweetened vanilla almond milk
  • 1/2 cup gluten free old fashioned rolled oats
  • 1/4 teaspoon vanilla extract

To top it off grab some sliced fresh strawberries, blueberries, steel cut oats, and sunflower seeds!

In addition to the prepared acai, blend:

  • 1 1/2 tsp natural peanut butter (smooth)
  • 1 Tbsp unsweetened cocoa powder
  • 1/2 cup unsweetened vanilla almond milk
  • 1/2 cup frozen strawberries
  • 1/4 teaspoon vanilla extract

Then top this lean, mean mocha bowl off with sliced banana, granola of choice, shredded unsweetened coconut, cocoa nibs, more peanut butter and a drizzle of raw honey!
